Two Stones, One Stunning Space: PA Bluestone + Andover Veneer

When it comes to designing an outdoor living space, choosing the right stone is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. But it’s not just about picking a single material—some of the most striking landscapes come to life by pairing complementary stones that bring out the best in each other.

In this featured project, the homeowners partnered with IMMACULATE Landscape Specialists, LLC and the Penn Stone team to combine 100% natural Andover veneer stone with thermal, full-color Pennsylvania Bluestone—a pairing that delivers both timeless elegance and natural charm.

Pennsylvania Bluestone: Smooth, Sophisticated, and Naturally Durable

For the patio surface and stair treads, Pennsylvania Bluestone creates a clean and refined foundation. Sourced from a quarry in Northern Pennsylvania, this bluestone features a thermal finish—a heat-treated surface that’s slip-resistant and smooth underfoot.

With its subtle range of grays, blues, and earthy rust tones, full-color bluestone offers the best beauty and practicality. It’s a natural choice for patios, walkways, and outdoor steps thanks to its:

  • Long-lasting durability
  • Neutral, complementary color palette
  • Easy-to-clean, low-maintenance surface

This project uses full-color bluestone in large-format rectangular shapes, creating a modern, organized layout that contrasts beautifully with the more rustic textures nearby.

Andover Veneer Stone: Warm, Textured, and Full of Character

To add depth and visual interest to the vertical elements—retaining walls, stair risers, and column bases—the team chose Andover veneer, a 100% natural stone with rich color variation and a layered, hand-laid appearance.

Andover’s mix of browns, rusts, charcoals, and grays echoes the tones of the surrounding landscape and beautifully complements the cool hues of the bluestone. It’s exceptionally well suited for:

  • Vertical surfaces that need texture and detail
  • Creating contrast against smoother stone or wood
  • Designs that call for a warm, welcoming aesthetic

Why This Pairing Works

Pairing multiple types of natural stone may seem intimidating, but it can bring sophistication and depth to your project when done well. In this case, the bluestone’s cool tones and smooth finish are the perfect counterpoint to Andover’s warmer, textured presence.

Together, they offer:

  • Visual contrast that keeps the space interesting
  • Material balance between horizontal and vertical elements
  • A palette that plays well with surrounding plants and natural light

The combination of the two stones—sleek underfoot and rugged on the walls—gives this outdoor space a well-balanced look that feels both custom and cohesive.
