Penn Stone, Lancaster’s premier hardscaping, masonry, and outdoor furniture showroom, is proud to celebrate 110 years of creating beautiful residential and commercial living spaces for the Lancaster community.
In 1914, Penn Stone opened its materials yard in Lancaster City and delivered brick and other masonry materials to homes and businesses using horses, wagons, and a pickup truck. Over a century later, Penn Stone is led by its third family of owners, John and Mara McGrann, and continues to help people build a life outdoors that they love.
“Mara and I feel fortunate to continue Penn Stone’s legacy as a family-owned business that’s played an important part in the history of building our community,” McGrann said. “Every year, I feel more appreciative of how we fit in among our staff and the quality contractors we work with in our joint effort to help people invest in their most important asset: their home.”
The McGrann family first acquired the business in 1986 when John McGrann’s father, Barney McGrann, took over as owner. John spent his early career working for his dad, learning the ins and outs of the business.
John and Mara eventually took over as owners in 2009, growing Penn Stone from its masonry material supplier roots into a full hardscaping design center and outdoor living showroom supporting projects spanning from hardscaping to residential and commercial construction and remodeling. Today, homeowners and contractors can experience an extensive masonry materials yard as well as a curated collection of modern outdoor furniture, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and more.
“I was born in Lancaster, raised my family here, and have seen the landscape of our community change over the past decades,” McGrann said. “I love driving around the county and spotting all the homes and commercial buildings we’ve helped build—and, as a result, the families, businesses, and communities those spaces have helped support. I like to think our team has played a small role in what makes our community a wonderful place to live.”
Penn Stone will commemorate its 110th anniversary at a celebratory event on May 2 at its Downtown Lancaster showroom. Employees, customers, partners, and community leaders will gather as they travel back to 1914-era Lancaster, when the company made its very first delivery.
